Patagonia and Gore-Tex — Great Chemistry
Waterproof and breathable, without those pesky PFCs…
Perfluorinated compound, fluorocarbons or PFCs for the short are what makes water “bead” rather than bed in to your waterproof. But just because they’re good at repelling water and oil doesn’t mean they don’t hang about in the environment, bioaccumulating.
Patagonia have been working with Gore-Tex to cut down on the PFCs in the brand’s famous waterproof membrane, and in 2022 they finally cracked it with a new fabric called ePE Gore-Tex.
First used on lightweight two-layer jackets, the fabric has now been upgraded to a more durable three-layer version designed with snow in mind.
